Say the word “Reading,” and you’re bound to spark memories in most people of a very famous game board’s Reading Railroad property. It was a real company, founded as the Philadelphia & Reading (P&R) Railroad, and later called the Reading Company. At the height of Pennsylvania anthracite mining, the Reading Railroad transported coal from the region to the port of Philadelphia, for shipment and sale up and down the East Coast. The city, Pennsylvania’s fifth largest, is strategically located between Philadelphia and Harrisburg, the state capital. Its position between Allentown and Lancaster also contributes to its stature as a transportation crossroads.
Iron and steel production in Reading made it a nexus for early automobile manufacturing. The Duryea Motor Co. was the first manufacturer in the U.S. to build gasoline-powered automobiles. The Daniels Motor Co. was famous for custom-built coaches, a business model that eventually failed in the face of Henry Ford’s mass production. The Reading-Standard was known for producing racing motorcycles but could not compete successfully in the general consumer market.
Pretzel baking has been a Reading tradition since the 1700s when immigrants of German descent took up residence in the area and shared favorite recipes from the old country. Pretzel production continues today at the Bachman, Tom Sturgis, Diffenbach, and Unique Pretzel bakeries.
Carpenter Technology Corporation, headquartered in Philadelphia, operates a Reading factory that’s become one of the city’s major employers. Their loyalty to the city could be due to the fact that James Henry Carpenter, the company founder, was born in Reading. Carpenter manufactures highly specialized steel and alloy products used in industries like aerospace, defense, and medicine. One might even consider the company a highly evolved survivor of the Pennsylvania steelmaking industry that once flourished in the region. The Wright Brothers actually used Carpenter steel in their engine and, at the request of the U.S. Navy, Carpenter invented the armor-piercing steel projectiles later credited as providing a major advantage in the Spanish-American War.
East Penn Manufacturing Co. is another large employer in the Reading area. East Penn is a family-owned manufacturer of lead-acid batteries and accessories which are distributed around the world. The company employs more than 8,000 people and is the largest single-site battery manufacturer in the world. Their “Deka” batteries are among the more well-known brands for automotive, marine, and RV use.
